I do not disagree regarding the carbon but: Carbon usually holds on for two weeks so it might take up some of the compounds needed for plants, but with plenty of light +CO2 there should be no trouble - I do not know the water source that will be used but as far as I read, some aquarists rely only on light+CO2 at the beginning of 'cycling' a planted tank without adding any ferts/compounds thus preventing algae bloom. After the carbon has done its roll it can be used as a fine medium for bacteria or just be removed from the tank. (Assuming the bio media is functioning and can hold up the tank....) I do not use carbon in any of my tanks but I think that when starting a planted tank (In my case as well) it might just help the tank cycled. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carlos Sanchez" <tsunamicarlos@hotmail.com> To: <aga-member@thekrib.com> Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2004 11:16 PM Subject: Re: [AGA Member] Aquarium Planning > Remember that there is no true "cycle" for Nitrogen in a planted aquarium. > Plants will readily > absorb all NH4 in the water, so you may never actually see an ammonia or > nitrite spike.
