I do not disagree regarding the carbon but:
Carbon usually holds on for two weeks so it might take up some of the
compounds needed for plants, but with plenty of light +CO2  there should be
no trouble - I do not know the water source that will be used but as far as
I read, some aquarists rely only on light+CO2 at the beginning of 'cycling'
a planted tank without adding any ferts/compounds thus preventing algae
bloom.
 After the carbon has done its roll it can be used as a fine medium for
bacteria or just be removed from the tank. (Assuming the bio media is
functioning and can hold up the tank....)
I do not use carbon in any of my tanks but I think that when starting a
planted tank (In my case as well) it might just help the tank cycled.
