The best way for a hobbiest to propegate from seeds is to get one of those 
seed starter boxes from a hardware store.  Let it grow until it's too big 
for the container then move it to a 2L soda bottle with soil and let it grow 
out some more.

Soda bottle preparation, ala Paul Krombholtz (works really well). Cut the 
top 1/4 of the bottle off, insert soil and plantlet, put top back on with 
the top end slightly inside the bottom to keep moisture, and seal with 
packing tape.  Occasionally add bread or oatmeal flakes to produce CO2 and 
there you have it, a compact little greenhouse.  I use this method for 
Crypts and it works really well.
