On my tanks i use a mixture of 10000k pcf and zoomed's florasun NOFL which I won at an auction. I have no conclusive 'proof' that my plants are more compact due to the 10000k bulbs, but I do get compact growth. However, research has shown that plants in early stages of development will respond to blue light through growth inhibition. This causes the plant to grow toward that light source. What do I mean? Scientists took sprouting plants and shined blue light on one side of the plant with no other light source. This caused the plant to bend itself towards that light. How did it do this? If you were to bend a pipe to one side, the pipe must become more compact on one side than the other side or else the pipe remains straight. So plants, to bend their growth, must cause an inhibition of growth on one side while the other side continues to grow. This causes them to bend ------------ ----+++++ | Blue Light source--> + | + | | | + = growth inhibited (compacted) - = normal growth Scientists discovered that blue light has the largest (only?) effect on plants in this manner. Researchers then compared the growth of plants isolated to only blue light to that of sunlight and found that since blue light "inhibits" cell growth that all of the plants under blue light were more compact than their sunlight counterparts. Sorry if some of this sounds hazy, I only caught glimpses of information out of my Plant Physiology course. I can always dig up the papers though :). THe scientists were doing research on photoreceptors in plants. All in all, will the 10000k bulbs make more compact growth? Maybe. Many times the light coming out from the 10000k bulb is not blue but bright white. I'd like to know why some of these bulbs are not blue but white? Could there be a strong red peak along with the blue peak to make white light? I have not had experience with these bulbs promoting algae growth. I personally like the look of the white lights. It makes the system seem cleaner. The reds in my fish and plants really stand out against the green. I found when I was using the 5000k and 6500k bulbs that things were a little "washed out," but this is all personal preference. I believe that tom barr said amano uses 8800K bulbs, and, in fact, tom barr has far more experience than I do in the field of science and aquatic plants. Amano also uses a lot of light to create intense lighting habitats for his bunch plants. I know that light intensity plays a role in plant growth, but do not remember reading much literature on it. Maybe tom barr or others could enlighten us. sorry for the long-winded email. I hoped to explain the blue light "compact" growth subject. Anyway, I hope others do chime in.
