Scott Hieber and I are planning to go to Brazil in January with Dr. Labbish Chao on his annual Project Piaba trip. This year however, besides traveling up the Rio Negro to Barcelos for the Ornamental Fish Festival, with plenty of exploring along the way, we are also planning to spend some time heading north from Manaus along the Transcontinental Highway to check out aquatic plants and biotopes off the main river system. I have been to this area of the Amazon twice now, and for those who have not had the opportunity it, it is a life-changing experience. This is the chance to visit an incredibly beautiful, pristene environment and help an exciting conservation program at the same time. Best of all, you get to do it on a lovely, safe boat with great food and good company. If you're interested, please e-mail me off list and I can give you more information.
