Re: Re: Magazine sales (fwd)

Erik, the summary is good. I did not see yours. I can modify my described
position (which is not the way I intended it to be interpreted) to David's. If
Karen can go along with any, then I suppose that the SC would be in unison. I
can understand why you do not want to continue negotiations. I commend you for
your endurance to this point. I volunteer (unless David, who I think would be
better would do it). I suggest that the we only acquire no more than a
reasonable number of PAMS in total (say 2000), that they consist of as many
SETS as possible, and that the remainder, if there are any, be acquired for a
reasonable "lowball" price (to be negotiated). If there are any remaining PAMs
beyond that, we negotiate their demise (i.e. Dave keeps them with proviso that
he not compete with AGA for their sales; AGA gets them for long term storage
and sale, if the price is right; etc). In fact, if the membership exchange will
end up costing so much, then we might want to get the remaining!
issues for close to free -- to cost average down the unit price to a level
where we can reasonably expect to recoop our investment. Unless I am missing
something, this is not that dissimilar to Gomberg's proposal. In fact, I never
really saw that much divergence among all the discussions. If we permanently
pick up another 150 members, get our investment back in a few years and make
everyone happy, then this is win-win. N'est pas? Then there is the issue of
which AGA body can make this decision. Is the SC sufficient or does it have to
go to the MC, at least for political cover. Then, if Dave does not agree, we
walk.

I will do so now, and this will be my last action as a negotiator with
PAM:

* David would like to offer 1-year subscriptions to AGA in exchange for
back issue sales. David would also like to buy the rest of Dave's
   inventory at a lowball price.

* Neil would like to offer 1-year subscriptions to the AGA, but NOT in
exchange for anything. But he would like to find out how many back
issues Dave has and if he would give us all of them and if Diana would
sell them. But he needs to think about it more.

* Karen would like to purchase some or all of his back stock just for the
   bookstore, but no more.

Note that Dave has offered to do NONE of these options. His offer was a
straight trade of subscriptions for back issues, which he will use to "pay
off" his members instead of sending them back issues himself.

Someone else will have to negotiate this. My goal was to see the AGA
through the TAG problem, and PAM has now become a side issue. When I get
back from vacation, I will concentrate on finding a replacement editor for
TAG.
