Not a bad idea AT ALL!...

Remember, at this point,our marginal cost for each new member is only
postage.  When we get up to 1000, the marginal cost will still only be about
$4 per year plus postage. (my guess is that $7 per year would cover actual
marginal cost)

So, even if you gave them a $10 discount we'd make a LITTLE money on it.
You'd just have to make it clear that this is a new members ONLY deal, for a
one year membership only, and may be revoked at any time.  If even half of
those people renew the following year we'd be well ahead of the game.
