I'm not recommending an new discount amount -- don't know enough of the numbers to know what works. But. . . It could be prudent to give the things away -- bear with me, I'm just trying to make a point, not give the store away. If a high percentage of the membership tends to renew 2 or 3 times (renew once for 2 or 3 years), and it's just a question of getting them to sign up the first time, then a free first year could make sense. Forego $10 that you wouldn't have gotten anyhow because they weren't yet induced to join, and gain long term $20 -$30. If most don't go for 2nd and 3rd years, then it all depends on what you can get that first year, right? but then, we have some other kind of problem if they don't come back, don't we?
