Re: [AGA SC] Membership Drive and Robert H

I mostly agree with Karen. When I has working for the veterinary publishing company, we gave away hundreds of really expensive books to stores, colleges and universities, magazines, etc. We called them "desk copies" or "review copies" and wrote them off as donations.

AGA is also a business and you have to spend money to make money.

We understand that this is speculative and that we may never see a return on the investment. We are already giving memberships to people who *might* advertise. What's the difference?

HOWEVER, if you think that there might be some emotional/psychological/good-buddy mileage out of *you* personally buying something for them because this is *so very important to you*, then, I would reconsider my position. The implications of that would indeed get their attention. :-)

Hi David,

I think it's ridiculous for you to have to pay for subscriptions for
retailers! I kind of feel that if anyone on the BOD thinks someone should
get a comp membership because the either help AGA or the MIGHT help AGA,

we

should honor that request.

I don't want AGA to have to expend anything -- what is the actual cost for
us to print and mail out 4 magazines -- that is what I would pay.

I think you and Cheryl should work out what you both think is a reasonable
arrangement, and we can go from there. As far as I can see, the more
exposure we get in retail stores, the more we will tap into a group of
aquarists who are not already part of the organized hobby, and may never
have heard of us.
Here's an idea... Should we design a nice poster that retailers can

display

in their stores? Give them a one year trial subscription if they promise

to

display the poster for that period? Particularly with your stores, David,
you'd be in often enough to keep tabs on the posters.

Karen

The problem is that stores do not have anyu space that they can really spare
for posters and the like. Maybe they would put something up with the back
issues of TAG, but getting their attention is the first step -- which is why
I would like for me to give them a free one year subscription.

Cheryl -- what do you think?
David
