Re: [AGA-sc] opinions on speakers for convention?

Hmm... we'd be rejecting not only every one of Jim's speaker ideas, but
essentially every one of his suggested TOPICS (except for photography, which is not really one of the inventive ones).

I don't have any objection to the shrimp idea... I think it would be cool. I just don't see a name attached to it, so was trying to come up with realistic alternatives. Same with the other speakers (except Jay)

I don't have a problem taking a chance on Professor Tan, but we have to have back-up alternatives, because people don't always say "yes". In the professor's case, it's during the school year, and it might be impossible for him to get away from the university. My understanding from dealing with him (always through Loh, which leads me to believe he DOESN'T speak English) was that he was EXTREMELY busy. We worked on getting that article through, I think, 2 whole TAG cycles after Loh and I first talked about it.

Definitely like the idea of asking Jeff for photo workshop -- he'll probably be coming anyway (perhaps hawking his book).

Yep.

If Dave Wilson is a good headliner, wouldn't he be no more expensive as Ole or Troels? Hey, Australia's a little closer to the West Coast than the East Coast, so it might be cheaper this year... same with east Asian flights. :)

As I said originally, I heartily endorse Dave Wilson. I think you'd probably draw in some local 'Bow people just to hear him and shmooze a bit also. As far as the price is concerned, I only brought that up because someone said the same about Professor Tan, and the flights would probably be similar in cost/length. You are right, it's probably easier/cheaper for either of those choices doing it on the west coast. And I hadn't thought about the added cost of going across the country from Europe. From this coast, flights from Europe are cheap and plentiful. Ole would depend on where he was at that point in time. He spends a lot of time in S.E. Asia, but I believe he's back in Denmark at the moment. (was in Thailand for 3 years studying sea grasses, but I THINK that's done)

Yeah, my thoughts on talking with Tom Barr are, "we're trying to arrange the speakers. Could you recommend any local people?"

SF is a very strong club, and I think there are some other strong clubs in the area. I would think he could come up with some people. One thought there is that guy he works with who keeps the beautifully aquascaped Rift Lake cichlid tank.
