Mike As usual you are correct. The problem is one of education. I seriously doubt that most people misrepresent what species they have for a malevolent reason. While there is going to be some misrepresentation of localities at the collecter level,(if I tell everyone where I cuaght these then I'll have more competition for them) from there to the retailer it is probably issues of sloth, ignorance, and outdated referance material. As fast as ichthioligists rename and reorganise entire complexes,,, well I find it to be a real challenge to keep up with things. Pity the exporter/importer who doesn't have the entertainment time, tools, budget, or desire to keep current. they may be too busy trying to run a profitable enterprise. As far as the hobbiest/breeder, that is a battle that we need to continue to work with. While being far from a great apisto Id expert I have a wonderfull crew of volenteer experts that I can call on;) (I do welcome correction and instruction from people on this list and others.) I also do my best to pass on what little knowledge that I have to my fellow hobbiest's in the area. So until we are able to cliam total victory over ignorance and people stop (god forbid) discovering new and wonderful species. and all things in this world are catologed and named and proper correct texts are distributed. I'll continue to look for my bargains, and beg for assistance in correctly Id'ing the strange little creatures that I discover. Please forgive i meant no offense, insult, or injury just had to clear my air a little Erick -----Original Message----- From: Mike & Diane Wise [mailto:apistowise@bewellnet.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2000 2:34 PM To: apisto@majordomo.pobox.com Subject: Re: A. sp. Wangenflecken?? I too have seen some good bargains this way. About 20 years ago I saw a department store tank with a Black Ghost Knifefish in it. The label on the tank read "All fish $1.98". Obviously the Black Ghost went home and then to a fish auction very fast! Even though incorrect IDs are good for some, what happens when people advertise apistos for sale in the the ACA Trading Post or ASG Apisto-Emporium with these incorrect name? You buy expecting one thing and get something you don't want.
