"Typical" mortality is dependent on what you call a "Typical" rearing tank. Or more appropriately, a "typical" boimass per gallon. Death rates can be zero, and when the floating starts, it may be that the fish have grown large enough that they need more room. A nitrate/nitrite test can answer it, but if you have 40 fish at 1/4-3/4 inches in a ten or fifteen gallon (35-50 liter) tank, that's too many.
