microworms are a viable alternative especialy if you use grindle worms at about two weeks as well. Keep in mind that the cyclop eeze is very inexpensive as well $10-$20 a can for a healthy supply. You can use microworms all the way to two weeks but you should use something extra like the cyclop eeze. the problem with non live food is that it easily fouls the tank and thats the key to raising fry, keeping the water quality high. Perhaps the flake and other stuff fouled your tank a bit. Honestly it can be done using your method but the microworms may not be nutritious enough to get them cranked up.
