Yes, it is a reliable trait to differentiate the sexes.  These fish have slightly triangular tails and look for a small white streak on the dorsal and ventral edges of the tail corners...they are the females.  I see the wild green forms regularly...I always go back to this species and Keyholes every few years.

Hello Vinny
Is this really a reliable trait for sexing them??  A local pet shop had
about 8 really nice 2 inchers and i could not tell the difference sex
wise for the life of me and i've always wanted to try these guys.   Now
when you say both forms, i have never ever seen the green form in a shop
anywhere, do they ever get around or are they really an oddball lucky
catch if you do see them?
