I would remove the male.  If the tank is too small, he is not being given 
enough room to perform his "perimeter patrol" duties.  If she is unwilling to 
defend against the dithers, then move the eggs to their own tank.  But don't 
confuse defending the spawning site with "hiding in the cave".
