Re: Römer Atlas/recommendations

Hi George,

To tell the truth mainly the African cichlids have been popular in Hungary since the mid 1970s. I don't know why, but the dwarf cichlids are not among the favorites not counting the small ramirezi. I guess it is because the tap water here is medium hard (or hard) and alkaline - quite good for African cichlids - and the average cichlid keeper doesn't want to deal with water quality to make it suitable for dwarfs.

That is why only some of the Apistogramma species are available in Hungary like agasizzi, cacatuoides, borelli and some others like ramirezi. They are usually brought in the country by retailers from Germany and Austria - and Czech Republic has also strong traditions in breeding fish species, among them dwarf cichlids. The Hungarian retailers are ready to accept orders for other Apistogrammas or exotic dwarf species. The problem is to find compromise beetween a foreign wholeseller and the Hungarian retailer. The wholeseller is not always want to sell small ammount of fish for the retailer, and the retailer doesn't want to risk his or her business buying a lot from a particular species.

Zsolt
