1. I melafixed the whole tank
2. there was no noticable difference to the bio cycle
3. one word of warning, the melafix solution contains some sort of surfactant 
to mix the meluca essential oil into water - this may affect the uptake of 
oxygen - certainly scum surface bubbles form more easily and I have noticed 
fish in 'low water movement' tanks breathing heavily - even if it doesn't say 
so on the packet you should perhaps consider additional aereation.
