Re: sand vs gravel



I wonder if one can "burn off" the non-inert components by soaking the sand in a mild acid--perhaps vinegar or Coca Cola. I think I read some time ago that you can mix acid with your sand and see if there are any bubbles. The release of gas from the sand indicates that it has non-inert components to it.

play pit sand is generally considered as an acceptable inert aquatic sand,
and its cheap and widely available, but it needs washing very well and I
would give the label a good read. In my display tanks I used a branded
aquatis sand that seems to do the trick.
