I don't know if your using planted aquarium or not but, I find it much easier to control their environment in a bare bottom breeding tank. You can always return the breeders or some fry to the planted tank to enjoy. Some fish like the D. Filamentosus which I am now working with I've gone the planted root but, have to be real careful with water. I'm using no fertilizers and will add no new plants. All plants added in beginning are doing well with minimal full spec light. Just my two cents. If it works then fine. If not then back to the drawing board.
