Re: Fish ID

Tim,

Photos of the female in neutral & brood color would be nice to have. A photo of
the male in fright pattern would help too. This shows many of the dark markings
that aren't visible on dominant males. A. sp. Broad-band/Breitbinden has a
relatively long caudal peduncle. What you see as a caudal spot is actually Bar 7
on the caudal peduncle. The lateral band actually extends beyond it a few
scales. The caudal fin on Broad-band is also kind of variable. Some show totally
spotted caudals, some spotted in the middle of the tail & striped along the
outer edges - either upper, lower, or both. There is even a picture of a male in
Aqualog (p. 60 top) that shows virtually no pattern at all. We don't know if
these are distinct geographic form yet. We don't have enough collection data.
Considering that Broad-band is found all along the upper Negro/Orinoco river
systems (from the Rio Uaupés in Brazil to Caño Morocoy near Puerto Inirida,
Colombia, and around San Fernando de Atabapo, Venezuela), I wouldn't be
surprised if there actually are separate geographic forms.
