I found some significant variations in Rams I collected from different sites. Those collected from a stream coming out of the forest south of the Orinoco River were large fish with lots of red on the head and long black extensions on the dorsal fin. The other site was north of the Orinoco in dry savanah. They were collected from what appeared to be man-made depressions with no connection to any river or stream. Shallow and warm. The fish collected from this site were small, about half the size of the southern fish less red, more blue and the colors very intense. They also had lots of blue "spangles" on the sides. The females had lots of gold flecks in their side spots.
