Re: Who get to decide what is a new Apisto sp?

For all those with the same question, here was my
reply to Yvan Alleau earlier this evening:

Yvan,

The pictures are not the best, but based on them I
would say that A. sp. Paracas
& Kiko are forms of A. cf. eunotus
Orange-tail/Orangeschwanz. They look very
much like the A. sp. Willy form.

A. sp. Marie is a form of A. bitaeniata, probably
from around Iquitos.
[Kelly - I, too, was tempted to say A. mendezi
because it comes from the Rio Marie among other
places. But enlarging & sharpening the picture
shows that this fish has extended anterior dorsal
spines found only on A. bitaeniata.]

A. sp. Hauswell is something new. It could be a
color variant of A. sp.
Mouthbrooder/Maulbrüter or something related to A.
atahualpa. Of the 4 fish this
is the one of which I would be most interested in
seeing better photos. Hope
this helps.

Mike

p.s. Who is selling these fish?

[Ade - A. sp. Melgar is the same as A. sp. Nanay
(Melgar), different from A. sp. Nanay (Römer)
which is A. sp. Parrot/Papagei. A. sp. Apache is
the same as A. sp. Masked/Masken or the fish
presently coming in as Carapintada (It used to be
Angle-patch/Winkelfleck that first came in as
Carapintada.)]

Who gets to name fish. Well that's simple; anyone
who wants to. These are all probably Peruvian.
Most of the Peruvian exporters name their fish on
a whim. It's always best to see before you buy if
possible. Otherwise you could be buying something
you already have.

If you think this is bad, you should see the
comments on Apistogramma rubrolineata, a very good
looking newly 'scientifically' described species.
It is a valid name even though it was published in
an hobby magazine & didn't pass muster from any of
the cichlid taxonomists who have seen the paper.
