Hi Colin, What are the measurements of your tank ? I've only just joined this group about a week ago and have been lurking around reading mail. So Hi to everyone. I'm Pauline...what else do you want to know ? I've just set up my first fishroom and am trying to breed cacatoides and anomalas, and some other non-apistos. Just depends on what we can get in this country. That's all for now Pauline ----- Original Message ----- From: "Colin Gorton" <mr_apisto@graffiti.net> To: <apisto@listbox.com> Sent: 21 December 2002 06:05 Subject: Re: Should I use a tank separator? /You sold me gay girafes! > It wasn't my intention to sell any of the Aggies, just to persuade them to breed, I can then later separate them and hope they will continue breeding. I was getting pretty fed up with waiting for something to happen. I wouldn't normally put the mix in that I have, but I've been re-organising my fish room to accomadate the new 2000 litre tank and had nowwhere else to put them. I certainly wasn't expecting them to breed after no results for so long. As far as identiftying them is concerned (for later separation) the Santarem female is a lot bigger (older I presume.) > BTW talking of big aquaria, I've just been offered another big one (only 1000 litres this time;-)) for "a pittance" (don't ask me what a pittance is because I still don't know though I expect under 100Euros. It'll mean another re-organisation, but what the heck!) > BTW 1000Litres = 265 gallons > C:-)lin > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Mike & Diane Wise <apistowise@fgn.net> > Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2002 08:48:21 -0700 > To: apisto@listbox.com > Subject: Re: Should I use a tank separator? /You sold me gay girafes! > > > Colin, > > > > I wonder how you tell female A. agassizii from A. agassizii (Santarem)? My guess is you can't, and neither will your males. You now have mixed your Santarem population with aquarium agassizii. You no longer can be sure if your Santarem population is pure, so please don't sell them as such. > > > > Your A. nijsseni & A. panduro, on the other hand, should remain pure - as long as there are both sexes of both species. Still this is not a practice I recommend. Crossings can happen. > > > > Mike Wise > > > > Colin Gorton wrote: > > > > > I just couldn't resist, one of my favourite lines on film and I can use iot to my favourite list:-). There is a link, however tenuous, you see I've found that prolific breeders can encourage "gay" fish to discover the other sex. At present I have 1 quad of A. Nijsenni, 1 pair Pandurini, 1 pair Juruensis (flecked) and 1 trio of Agasizzi and 1 pair Agasizzi "Santarem" in an 80 gallon tank, the only one of these pairs that has previously been successful was the Panduros (the Nijsenni are still v. young.) All the above pairs are now breeding with the exception of the Aggies. There is so much going on in that tank that all the protection would keep the Mafia happy for years:-) > > > C:-)lin > > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > > From: "Tomoko Schum" <tomokoschum@knology.net> > > > Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 10:10:28 -0600 > > > To: <apisto@listbox.com> > > > Subject: Should I use a tank separator? > > > > > > > Hi y'all, > > > > > > > > There is a tiny baby boom going on here (in my rather > > > > crowded grow out tank of all places) and I am quickly > > > > running out of space (eggs are going, too.)
