Ditto what John said, plus daphnia. My geography is horrible... what
part of CA are you in? Do you have mosquitoes? Mosquito larvae are the
best! Actually, throw a couple of big Rubbermaid tubs in a sheltered
spot for daphnia, and you will probably also get all kinds of neat
different critters... usually, it's all food! I'd add frozen plankton to
your freezer...
Not that you asked, but sometime soon I'm betting that you'll be
kicking yourself for not having gotten that carpet out NOW!
