Re: A. sp. 'Pimentel'

Hello Mike

Interesting info! What species is pictured as Ap. sp. Pimentel in Romers atlas then? Is it a A. cf. pertensis according to you?
Altough it´s not a "true" miniapisto, its a nice form of the Pertensis!

Best regards/ Per

Per,

According to Koslowsk (2002) A. sp. Pimental (correct spelling) is
actually a geographic population of A. cf. pertensis from the lower Rio
Tapajós of Brazil. A. cf. pertensis was the fish originally thought to
be A. meinkeni until Koslowski (1985) proved that it didn't conform to
the true meinkeni. Then it was called A. cf. meinkeni. Römer introduced
live specimens of the true A. meinkeni into the hobby in the late 90s &
showing it was a true dwarf apisto, which Pimental is not. Males can
reach almost 6 cm long. This form remains smaller than some other
geographic forms, but grows larger than others (like A. sp.
Orange-seam/Orangesaum, Minima, White-seam/Weißsaum). I guess it would
more accurately called A. cf. pertensis (Pimental).

I bet that Pete's fish came from Trop Rio/Apisto Heaven (Rio de
Janeiro). Marco Lacerda tends to go out & find the rare ones. Oliver
brings in his fish, I think.
