Re: A. sp. 'Pimentel'

Per & Yvan,

The fish in Römer section on A. sp. Pimental more properly should be named A. cf. pertensis (Pimental). Römer's 'A. sp. Pimental' is only one population of a very widespread species (Rio Tefé, lower Rio Negro, Rio Trombetas, Rio Tapajós, & Rio Curuá drainages). The Orange-seam/White-seam/Minima form is probably a population of A. cf. pertensis that grows to a smaller size. A. cf. pertensis is closely related to the true A. pertensis, which is generally known to occur in the middle & upper Rio Negro (above Barcelos). The very slender form of 'A. pertensis' pictured in Römer's Atlas, from the Rio Preto do Unini, might be an extremely elongate & high finned form or A. pertensis, or it might be a separate species.

Since A. cf. pertensis is very closely related to A. pertensis they can be difficult to tell apart. The most noticeable differences include:

                   A. cf. pertensis A. pertensis

Body: heavier & more laterally slender & almost fusiform
                compressed

Dorsal fin: lower; lappets shorter; high; lappets very long,
                1st 3 - 5 lappets separate 1st 1-3 lappets separate
from the rest from the rest

Caudal fin: asymmetrical (upper lobe symmetrically round; spot
slightly longer than lower); rows & interstitial areas
spot rows wider than about equal width; "breaks"
interstitial area; often in spot rows rare
shows "breaks" in spot rows
(upper lobe)

Lateral band: narrow, but broader than on very narrow
                true A. pertensis

Caudal spot: vertically oval in shape & round & small
                can extend over the entire
                height of caudal peduncle

Suborbital broadens toward the edge of remains the same width over
(Cheek) stripe: the gill cover the entire gill cover

All of this is covered in Koslowski's recent book. It is a wealth of apisto ID information.

Hello Mike

Interesting info! What species is pictured as Ap. sp. Pimentel in Romers atlas then? Is it a A. cf. pertensis according to you?
Altough it´s not a "true" miniapisto, its a nice form of the Pertensis!

Best regards/ Per

According to Koslowsk (2002) A. sp. Pimental (correct spelling) is actually a geographic population of A. cf. pertensis from the lower Rio Tapajós of Brazil. A. cf. pertensis was the fish originally thought to be A. meinkeni until Koslowski (1985) proved that it didn't conform to the true meinkeni. Then it was called A. cf. meinkeni. Römer introduced live specimens of the true A. meinkeni into the hobby in the late 90s & showing it was a true dwarf apisto, which Pimental is not. Males can reach almost 6 cm long. This form remains smaller than some other geographic forms, but grows larger than others (like A. sp. Orange-seam/Orangesaum, Minima, White-seam/Weißsaum). I guess it would more accurately called A. cf. pertensis (Pimental).

I bet that Pete's fish came from Trop Rio/Apisto Heaven (Rio de Janeiro). Marco Lacerda tends to go out & find the rare ones. Oliver brings in his fish, I think.

Hi

You have found one of the species on my top five list! But I live in Sweden so I will not be able to buy the remaining three :-(
Do you have any idea from what exporter in South america these fishes came from? Can you check?
We have a nice shop in south of sweden who is regulary importing apistos from S-A. So perhaps they can also get hold of some pimentel.

I will get a box of wildcaught Ap. Commbrae next week from them! And the Commbrae have been no. one on my list for at least five years.

Well, take good care of your Ap. sp. Pimentel. It seems to be a very interesting species. Get some fry´s from them and spread them around. Perhaps some will end up in Sweden :-)

Best regards/ Per

Picked up four of these over the weekend, lovely little fish.
They were mixed in with a shipment of Tapajos Dicrossus, just as suggested
in the Atlas. They are in an aquarium with a good four inches of leaf
litter, and they are demonstrating just how well they can use this sort of
substrate. There are still three left at the dealer if anyone else wants to
have a try with them.
