Hi, some new stuff to "report": 1. We're keeping four mystery apisto's which my fiancee & I like to argue over species type, since we got them as contaminants at the local stores. (Currently, my guess is that they are A. cateii, A. eunotus, or at least in the same group/complex.) Two weeks ago, two of them spawned within about 3 days of each other. Of the remaining two fish, one was being beaten to a pulp, and one was starting to look more white with blue flecks all over its body, so I assume the latter is a male and the former is another female, perhaps not even same species. (Question for the group, as I'm very new to this: will nearby species of Apisto interbreed? Is there a chance we'll end up with an ugly cross?) Anyway, after about a week of the two females hoarding their fry in opposite corners of a 15g, the larger female managed to kidnap both broods and beat up the smaller one (out she came, and joined the one I removed to sickbay the previous week). 2. I just got back from Houston, TX. There is a new store there called Fins & Fangs, and they may be the only store in the western US to stock Apisto pandarini (sp?) at the moment. These fish look similar to A. nijsseni (same complex), but very very new. I have their number, if anyone is interested; I think they might ship them. We brought a pair back to Seattle for a friend (my tanks are totally full, otherwise two pair would have made the trip). - Erik --- Erik D. Olson amazingly, at home eriko@wrq.com
