Re: RAMS

Hi all,
Thomas has noticed that his rams appear to be dying a short time following
spawning attempts.

I have also seen this, and I figure that a likely explanation is that the
fish are sick/stressed, and the spawning event saps energy (either
making/laying the eggs or defending territory, etc.) to the point that the
fish are now more susceptible to disease and death. (The stress could be
due to improper conditions at the store or at home - sometimes it takes a
while to figure out what conditions your fish like best, and sometimes
they're just going to die no matter what you do, so it seems).

I have joked with a number of people about whether sick or stressed fish
feel the "Oh my god I'm gonna die I better try to spawn one last time" sort
of reproductive urge (forgive the anthropomorphising, please). What do you
all think?

In regards to fish spawning in groups, I have definitely seen this,
especially following a large water change in a particular tank with
multiple females/pairs. (Sometimes when a storm front moves in I've seen it
synchronized in multiple tanks as well - the barometric pressure thing, or
just coincidence?).
