pH and temperature extremes have been linked to skewed sex ratios.  As far as
hardness, all I have heard is that some species tend to spawn during the rainy
season, and the suspected trigger is that at this time of year, the hardness
and pH both drop due to the rain washing tannin-containing plant debris into
the rivers, and also just plain diluting the mineral content of the water.
