Hi Vicky, I enjoyed reading about your new "babies'. It must be a great feeling to look in the tank and see this blessed event!!. How are they all doing? Are they still in the 5 gallon tank? And what is the water chemistry? I am hoping to breeb mine. I just bought 3 Agazissis today to add to my male. Hope I got at least 1 female. I have some Cacatuoids, but I am having a health problem with the male. People on this list have been very helpful. Keep us updated. Thanks Diane AP>Hi Folks,, AP>Just a quick update to let everyone know how I am doing with my Apistos. AP>The first female Cacatuoides is still living in her 5 gallon tank with AP>her brood. They are big enough now that I can't really call them fry. AP>They are a little bigger than a 1/4 inch in size, and are growing really AP>quickly. They are now starting to eat flakes, and freeze dried red grubs, AP>and I'm gradually weaning them off the brine shrimp. There has been AP>absolutely no fry death, since they hatched, and the mother is still AP>supervising her brood. These guys are doing really well!! AP>The second female that had free swimmers, and eggs at the same time, AP>living with the male in the 15 gallon, ate all the fry and eggs, (with AP>the help of the male). I rescued 2 free swimmers, and the first mother AP>adopted them. I ended up moving the couple to a 5 gallon tank, and 2 days AP>later, (last Saturday), they spawned again. I took the male back out, and AP>moved him into a 15 gallon, with the 2 original Cacatuoides (that my AP>friend had given me, in the bucket of Apistos). AP>Her eggs hatched yesterday. She is tending the wrigglers and I think this AP>time, she will do OK raising this spawn. My gut instinct is, that the AP>couple ate the first 2 spawns, because the male distracted the female too AP>much. Maybe he wanted her to spawn again, and having wrigglers, and eggs AP>at the same time was just too much for her. AP>This morning, when I checked my tanks, I discovered some of the fish were AP>very busy last night. AP>The male Cacatuoides that I moved into the 15 gallon has spawned with AP>the original female that my friend gave me. The spawn is huge!! They AP>picked the largest flower pot in the tank, and the whole back and top are AP>covered with eggs. This female is older, and I'm hoping that she will do AP>OK, raising this spawn. I will have to leave the male in with her, till I AP>do another tank shuffle. AP>Two of the Pleurotaenia's living in the 20 gallon, have also been busy. AP>They paired off last week, turned bright yellow, and this morning there AP>are eggs in the pot they were guarding. They are in a community of 4 AP>Biatianata's, and the 5 Pleurotaenia's, 4 Cardinal Tetras, and 3 Otto AP>cats. The female is 3 times bigger than the male, and is guarding the egg AP>pot. The male patrols their territory, chasing everyone away. I'm kinda AP>worried about the safety of the Cardinals, and will probably move them AP>out tonight. The other Cichlids, seem to be respecting their territory, AP>and I'm going to leave the couple and their eggs, in this tank, and see AP>if they can raise their fry, in the community. AP>Does anyone on the group, have any input/comments, of how a couple could AP>raise their fry, in a community of Apistos? Judging by how aggressive AP>the male is about guarding his mate, and their egg pot, I think he may AP>have a good chance of protecting them in the tank. The female is also AP>guarding the pot, and wouldn't come out to eat this morning. I ended up AP>squirting brine shrimp right in front of her pot, and she ate, sitting AP>right at the front door of her egg pot. AP>Read into this,, I don't have enough room to move them at this time, AP>cause of the unexpected spawning of the 2 Cacatuoides in the 15 gallon. AP>The Tecurui's in their species 15 gallon, are also very busy to-day. One AP>male has a 3 female harem, and the 3 female's were all cleaning pots this AP>morning, with the male going from pot to pot, checking on the progress. AP> I wonder if they are getting ready to spawn. The other male, has 1 AP>female, and they hang around a pot on the other side of the tank. I can't AP>see into that pot, but I suspect they may have already spawned. AP>I guess it really is spring!!
