I'm not the biggest fan of TFH either, but that's a rather radical statement. I
can think of several books that in the past have been exceptionally good and very
valuable the hobbyists:

Breeding Aquarium Fish v. 1-6 (reprints from old TFH magazines)
Cichlids of the World (outdated now, but exceptional for its time)
Characoids of the World (The best review by one of the best on the subject. Sadly
out of print.)
Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fish (outdated now, but on par with Innes' Exotic
Aquarium Fish in the 50s & 60s. This was when HRA was really interested in fish.)

Burgess' catfish atlas (a very good book by a well respected catfish specialist)
Encyclopedia of Live Foods (A translation of an excellent German book. Is there
any better out there?)
Untergasser's book on fish diseases (Another English translation of an
exceptional German book.)
The Ecology of Fishes (An English translation of a classic Russian book, now out
of print.)There are more, but I think you can see the point. You have to be
choosey. Unfortunately for most serious hobbyists, TFH Pubs. has gone more toward
the beginner's pamphlet (in a hardback book form) and coffee table picture books
and less to the more "meaty" specialist books. They're making a lot of money from
it, so I guess you can't knock success. But is it any wonder that the most
popular fish atlases and cichlid books on most serious hobbyists' shelves are now
being published in Germany?
