Yes, but a 220L tank should be large enough for him to avoid the female, PROVIDED that there are no other males with territories in the same tank. If the female drove the male out of his territory (now hers) into another male's territory, he'd definitely have problems. My experience with macmasteri-group species makes me think that the spawning and the male's death are only coincidental. The more closely related two species are to each other, the more likely to see cross-breeding.
