What are the dimensions? If 18 or 24" long then I'd say
certainly big enough for a pair. You may, depending on
the pair have to move the male after spawning to curb
aggression or if you keep losing spawns.

fish it may just be that they have lost viability due to
repeated brother/sister matings, try introducing some
unrelated blood.
To grow out fish in a 55G is certainly a good idea but I
doubt you would raise more fry in a mixed species tank.
Anomala can be pretty tough fish when breeding.
