I use small ammount of baking soda for raising my fry, as well as in my plant tank to give the water more buffering capacity- because the water comes out of the tap almost distilled (ie. no buffering capacity <1 german hardness). For the plants I use CO2, so I add baking soda to keep the pH from going too acid. For the fry, I use it to prevent pH crashes- I find that when I am feeding young fish lots of food (to grow them up quickly) in small volumes of water, there is a tendancy for the pH to crash a lot easier (I know that apistos can handle relatively acid water, but it is easier for me to keep the water stable- which believe is more important.) For the nijsenni for example- I do nothing to the water except remove the chlorine- with aeration and a declorinator.
