Hello Vern In some areas the water is SO soft that it will continue to have a pH drift down to a very low acidic range. People use baking soda to help keep the water from getting too acidic. The baking soda when added to water will make your water alkaline. When added in the right amount to tap water done before a water change causes the pH from drifting down to a too acidic range. Hope this helps. I don't need to do this to my soft water but a friend in a nearby town whose water is very soft will get pH values in the 4.5 range and this kills off some of his plants.
