I have had three females spawn within a week and with the same male in just a 20h. But I would recommend a tank with the base of at least a 20L. From my experiences, I'd say you are wise to use dither fishes. Actually, for D. maculatus, the use of tetras is not just for dithering. The female is *very* active in defending the fry and I never had a female raise fry without some "threatening" tetras in the same tank.
