The hard stuff that cakes on the glass, rocks, lid, etc, doesn't have the environment to support infusoria. I don't work to promote the algae, but as I feed the plants, sometimes it develops a soft, hairy "beard" all over things, mostly on floating plants. Higher light levels seem to trigger it, for sure.
