As far as I understand it, there are numerous strains of the beneficial bacteria with most of them capable of living efficiently around the neutral pH mark. However, the quantities/efficiency begins to drop off about 6.2 and will fizzle out at around 5, but there are some still around. So on this count it is probably justifiable to maintain filters and sponges on the basis that something is better than nothing.
