Don't be so sure that there *has* to be a pair. I had almost twenty juvenile A. cacatuoides, and all of them were male. I think the tank was too warm when they were fry (it is temp. that determines apisto sex, is it not). I hope this isn't the case for you, but I thought you should know. Good luck!
