Max, Uwe has done behavioral work in the wild, floating for hours along a stream bank using a mask and snorkel (wrinkled skin method), but most of his work, naturally, had to be done in aquaria. Basically much of his large tank observations are also seen in the wild. I'm not positive about "bachlingen", either. German writers are as good (no, better) at making up descriptive words as English writers are. I just went on context to interpret it. Bach is German for brook, stream, or rivulet, "-ling" is a diminutive suffix, and "-en" makes it plural. Therefore, it means tiny (inhabitants) of rivulets. Pencilfish apparently don't have a set name in German. I have seen them (collectively) called "Schlanksalmer" (slender characoid) and more commonly "Ziersalmer" (ornamental characoid). Killies are normally called "Zahnkarpen" (tooth carps). Uwe had already mentioned characoids (Salmlern) in the sentence, so I presumed that the only other small surface dwelling fish would be rivulins.
