Rick's comments notwithstanding, the audience of both lists is the SAME.

They are both directed at members, but are open to anyone.  gsas-announce 
is low-volume for those who don't want to read through all the chit-chat. 
gsas-member is, as it says on the website, a free-for-all.

I named the second list gsas-member because gsas-chat, gsas-discussion 
and other names sounded too limiting and insipid.  Also, maybe it 
would guilt the non-member participants into joining. That's all.

Just because some chooses to interpret gsas-announce as implying 
non-member participation doesn't make it so.  In fact, there is NO 
participation in gsas-announce -- it's a one-way list.  Subscribers can 
never reply (their reply goes to gsas-member), thus can never participate 
on gsas-announce.
