Hi All,
Erik, thank you for clarifying the different categories in our membership
database for me. It seems like a good system but is it hard to determine
how many "active" (paying) memberships we have in the club?
Piece of cake, that's the whole point of having a database. Here's the
breakdown on active members:
+------------+----------+
| MemberType | COUNT(*) |
+------------+----------+
| Single | 76 |
| Family | 27 |
| Senior | 1 |
| Business | 16 |
| Speaker | 1 |
| Exchange | 9 |
| Life | 11 |
+------------+----------+
Note that this includes the people that are supposed to be purged.
Oh, this does mean that most of the speakers have been incorrectly
classified, probably as "Single". Oopsie. We can fix that.
And for comparison, here are all the de-activated members since we started
the database circa late 1990's:
+------------+----------+
| MemberType | COUNT(*) |
+------------+----------+
| | 1 |
| Single | 371 |
| Family | 61 |
| Senior | 4 |
| Business | 24 |
| Speaker | 12 |
| Exchange | 16 |
| Life | 4 |
+------------+----------+
Obviously the
information would be helpful in determining if we are growing, shrinking, or
just maintaining our membership. For example, do we have a larger paying
membership as of 1/1/10 compared with 1/1/09?
It MIGHT be possible to get some of this older information by going into
backups of previous years' databases. But that's a bit of work I do not
wish to get into just at the moment, and not sure how accurate it is
because I know the club did not purge very often. I will say that back in
the late-90's, I used to mail out ~100-150 newsletters, but far more of
them were to exchanges and stores. So in the larger picture, the club is
doing better now than it was 15 years ago, which bucks the national trend
in a big way.
I am kind o wondering how we determine the size of our "active" (paying)
membership. I am guessing that 'Single', 'Family', 'Senior', and 'Junior'
would all be "active" members but how about 'businesses"? Are all of our
'Business' memberships paying "active" members or do we send them
newsletters because they are a store in the area....maybe both? I know that
is a question to address to Margie but maybe someone else knows?
Businesses expire and deactivate just all the others (except Life and
Exchange). They are added/renewed when they donate to the auction or
offer us sponsorships. Now I suppose Margie can add them with a really
really far-off expire date...
