Those really old filters usually just have the motor sitting on top of a vertical tube, and then it spits water back out into the tank. A u-tube helps fill back up the filter box. The one you got may be different. I would look up the manufacturer and model name on the internet. I don't think it too likely to find much information, but it is worth a shot. If you happened to get one of the newer filters, this should help...
