RE: cheapo metal halides

Lets see, a 180 liter tank should be about a 50 gallon tank give or take a
few gallons :). Having said that I would think your friend would want to go
with a 175 watt halide. You can get some really good deals on 175 watt
halide bulbs from many places on the web. The last 2 I purchased were $59
plus shipping for German 10K bulbs. 10K bulbs will actually work very well
for a planted tank. My brother has one over his 100 gal planted tank along
with 2 110w VHO bulbs. He has excellent growth! If the halide stuff from
Lowes is 175 watts then just have her take the bulb back and order something
more suitable color wise. I think she will find that the color of the bulb
from Lowes will be too yellow for what she wants. For good prices on Halide
stuff look at http://www.hellolights.com. They have a special right now on a
175W retrofit kit for $135.00 plus bulb. This is an especially good price as
it includes an electronic ballast rather than a coil/can ballast
(http://www.hellolights.com/17methalbalk.html ).

My friend is from Russia and did a lot of aquascaped tanks there but is
not up on American equipment and she said gear there was much cheaper
overall. She got metal halide bulbs like they use in the store fixtures
at Lowes, and later figured out that the person who was selling the
bulbs was very very concerned about them and suspicious overall. Seems
they have been mistaken for those engaged in the horticulture of illegal
substances.
Her most current idea is return the Lowes stuff and buy a metal halide
bulb and fixture/ballast set she found on a site selling deliberately to
the growers of said illegal plants, which offers 75 watt bulbs and
fixtures in the 6700K range for a reasonable price. Anyone ever use a
metal halide system and know what wattage to go for? I think 2 75 watt
bulbs ought to be fine but she thinks maybe it's not enough. The tank is
very long and probably 30 inches deep, tops. She wishes to have it look
like Takashi Amano's work... gonna need a CO2 system too. She is still
learning our words for things she used in Russia, her English is stellar
but not only is it British style hence different meanings and words, she
didn't get technical English in her schooling so anything high tech we
have to explain to her. Once she understands what we are describing she
only needs to be told once, though. Hence me having to ask all the
questions.
Actually being a person raised with English I still find the tech and
lingo info on many websites daunting. Just try telling a beginner they
need pc lights, DIY CO2, their fry need bbs, ph will need buffering, and
that really the substrate should be laterite based, and you just get a
blank look from just about everyone. :)
