Re: Diatom Filters

I have the Whisper Diatomagic and am not thrilled about it... it's good for getting mulm and such but not for greenwater. I like to use it anyways on occasion, I stir up the sediment from the gravel, and let the diatom filter take it out of the water, if you have to move or do a huge water change on a tank it's a good idea to do that before hand. Have heard the HOT Magnum works well for the same purposes and costs less, plus it can be used with a gravel vac attachment to save you the trouble of stirring up the tank too much. Wish I had bought that. Vortex supposedly is best but you have heard about the noise and PITA factors, I have also heard of the hoses detaching and thus water spilling everywhere plus then the motor runs dry and burns out. Also heard the glass body breaks a lot.

I sometimes consider that maybe the club should have a vortex (with the plastic body) as a part of the library that people can check out. Seems like a device that only gets used twice a year if that for all the owners.

Does anyone have any experience using diatom filters?

I am trying to get a sense if they are worth it for water polishing and to a
lesser extent, disease prevention.

Can anyone recommend a specific filter and give me some insight on how much
of a pain they are to clean and how much they cost to maintain? Are they
worth the trouble? Any specific models to recommend?

Thanks in advance..
