Steev pretty much gets my hero of the day award.  I went to the LFS and
picked up 3 of those $3 glass thermometers and they work great.  All three
of them agree on one temp in a tank!  No other thermometer I have had has
been able to pull that off...and for just $3 each.

I also found out my tank had been running at 86 degrees for loaches!
Wowsers!

Thanks so much Steev.  This is an example of why this community is so
important to me.

I mean those little glass tubes with a thermometer inside. Some might be off
a little,
but most read within a degree of what you get with a laboratory-grade
mercury
thermometer. You can do a little survey yourself by grabbing a bunch of them
at the
local pet store and compare the readings among the lot of them (with the
caveat that
they may be stored at slightly different temperatures on the shelf).
