The research I have had as a whole supports both your opinions.

Seems if a Koi is raised from fry with plants then they tend to ignore them.
If they are added to a planted tank as teenagers, they tear it up.  Also,
most folks tended to suggest strongly rooted plants and starting with adults
rather than tiny stem plants.
