Connie- Well, I wish I knew what minerals I was talking about - then I'd be more specific. But that reminds me: at the auction there was a bottle of "South American Cichlid Salts" that people thought sounded amusing, and so since few bid on it I got it for $2. It is actually a nice blend of salts (mineral), including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and ... I can't find the bottle now .... a bunch of other standard minerals that are needed for most life forms. So I think I might use that for shrimp and things. I read a scientific paper the other day saying that depletion of calcium in some lakes has caused a decline in the anount of zooplankton for fish to feed on. Daphnia was the principle organism they studied and that's why i read it. But the lesson was that Daphnia require a minimum amount of calcium in their water or they die off gradually. So maybe that wouls be true for other freshwater shrimp. Additionally they probably have a minimum requirement for some of the other minerals, like magnesium and phosphorous. Susan Welenofsky has mentioned before that the Cherry Shrimp do better when she adds minerals, and I think she was using a little Marine Salt - a nice blend of common and uncommon mineral salts including lots of calcium and magnesium. She also adds iodine supplements in some cases.
