Hi Matt, Yes, it is interesting. Jack Wattley started to raise discus fry artificially quite some time ago. However, from what I red in one of his old articles on this subject, he used to smear the egg formula on the bowl's wall, at the water edge. I find the use of the air stone as a dummy parent, like in the video posted on AquaDiscovery, quite innovative and looks that it works very well. Anyway, the aquarist who posted the video raises discus fish both artificially and naturally, with the babies feeding off the parents - here are two videos with the parents raising their own babies: http://www.aquadiscovery.com/v/266,young-pair-with-fry-3.html http://www.aquadiscovery.com/v/269,young-pair-with-fry-6.html Sandu ----- Original Message ----- From: "matt kaufman" <igotadose@hotmail.com> To: <gsas-member@thekrib.com> Sent: Thursday, July 23, 2009 4:33 PM Subject: Re: [GSAS-Member] AquaDiscovery - artificially raising discus fry > From: info@simion.info > To: gsas-member@thekrib.com > Date: Thu, 23 Jul 2009 13:32:18 -0700 > Subject: [GSAS-Member] AquaDiscovery - artificially raising discus fry > > Hi guys, > > Here is a video, posted on AquaDiscovery by Ciprian Marcu, about > artificially raising discus fry - enjoy! > > http://www.aquadiscovery.com/v/273,artificial-feeding-of-discus-fry.html > > Sandu Interesting. I recently learned that artificially raising discus fry on egg yolk mixes, which I first attributed to Jack Wattley, actually was discovered in the late 1950's/early 1960's. Around the same time, some aquarists learned that the discus fry can be raised on baby brine shrimp, too. The risk with the egg yolk mixes is fouling the water, but if you are diligent and keep the containers clean (Wattley used old porcelain bowls), they grow fast. Wayne Leibel had an article in a recent TFH about contact feeding in cichlids; Discus aren't the only ones that do this.
