The temperature on my overstocked 50 gal tank (usually kept around 74°) rose to to 84° several times. All the inhabitants (1 three-inch+ pearlscale goldfish, 1 three-inch calico ryukin goldfish, five zebra danios, 9 glowlight tetras, at least 9 white clouds, and 1 articulated hillstream loach), survived. The tank is thickly planted (mostly java ferns and anubias) aerated by waterfall filter and large airstone. I did my usual weekly 50% water change, kept the lights off except for the daily feeding. Although I assumed everyone was extra hungry because of the higher temperatures, I fed a bit less than usual and counted on the smaller fishes' ability to easily out swim the goldfish. Tank temperature has returned to normal, and everybody (including plants) seem to be 'jes fine! Thanks to the big Aquarium-God-in-the-sky/water. I have a bunch of bristlenose in my old discus tank which I used to bring up to 84-86 degrees when I had Discus in there. I guess the tanks could have gotten up in the mid 90 degree range easily. I was gone during the Seattle heat wave and so missed out on the fun (I was in Foggy San Francisco where the temp topped out at 70) The tanks in the hottest part of the house are unfortunately my Axolotl and my two Saltwater Nano Tanks. My Axolotl was NOT happy even though I had my daughter throwing ice in his tank every chance she had. He seems better now but I am still doing frequent water changes and adding ice - he likes ICE cubes always! I really need to move him to a cooler spot. My saltwater tanks did ok but over the years I have had the things in them pared down to what would survive hotter temps (ie everything else I tried died). I tell you saltwater tanks are really not for the faint of heart. I did loose my Bubble coral out of my smallest tank. I wish I had had my daughter switch the saltwater tanks to lights off during the day. Oh well hopefully we will not get too many more periods like that.
