It's probably up to personal taste, but I don't use the magnets anymore due to the scratching issues already mentioned. The first time you permanently gouge a several hundred dollar tank is one time too many. If you're careful it might never happen, but in my experience sooner or later it does. Most of the magnets I've used aren't strong enough to get off some of the more tenacious algae without excessive scrubbing. Cleaning my 90gal takes me twenty minutes or so to get looking nice and clear with magnets, and I can typically do it in two with an edged scraper (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3728+3764+12756&pcatid=12756) I've found my wife's expired bus passes on the end of a diy handle work just as well and are free.
